Reflecting on 2011
Several notable events highlighted a very successful season at the Northern Ontario Railroad Museum and Heritage Centre. The Open House and the Father's Day Car Show helped kick off the season in June and over the next few months the museum hosted several themed teas, its annual gold panning adventure on the Vermillion River and the grand opening of its Garden of Life. Events such as NORMHC's curling bonspiel and the arrival of the Terror Train 6077 helped close the season.
The biggest acquisition this past year was the arrival of a hot metal car from Vale. Former Vale employee Rob Flemming had saved the car from the demolition torch until a grant could be obtained for its transportation to Capreol. The arrival of the car highlighted the grand opening of a mining exhibit which also features several pieces of underground equipment used by Falconbridge /Xstrata. The museum has also purchased a former Canadian National Coach Car, the Cape Porcupine, and it should be on display by summer 2012.
Looking forward to 2012, the museum continues to work with the City of Greater Sudbury on the acquisition of the former Capreol fire hall and police station. The building will provide much needed space for additional exhibits and programming. NORMHC is also working on an expansion for the Garden of Life and hopes to have a garden train operational by its opening in May of 2012.
NORMHC is also fundraising and seeking support for two significant projects. It is looking to acquire a steam locomotive playground structure that was designed to resemble CN steam locomotive 6077, currently on display at the museum. The play structure will provide a more-hands on experience for children visiting the museum and help encourage a healthy and active lifestyle. The second project is a shelter for steam locomotive 6077 that resembles a Victorian Era railway station.
The Terror Train 6077 will be returning to Capreol next year and a full list of NORMHC's events for 2012 will be posted in the coming months so please continue to check back regularly. Should you have any questions about visiting the museum, volunteering or making a donation towards a specific project, please do not hesitate to contact us. We would love to hear from you.
