President's Message
Greetings from the Northern Ontario Railroad Museum and Heritage Centre! Let me begin by thanking the Sudbury Horticultural Society for having the museum as one of its sites on the annual Garden Tour. The Peace Garden across from the CN administration building and one residential garden in Capreol are also on the tour so we expect a large number of visitors . I have previously stated that the museum grounds and the new Garden of Life, on their own, merit a visit. Our inclusion on the garden tour confirms that statement and shows that the NORM has a wider array of things to experience than many expect from a railroad museum. Another jewel is the building that houses the museum which was the home of the first CN superintendent in Capreol. It was constructed in 1916 and includes a quaint tea room and other features that will enhance one's visit to the NORM.
If you have not already been to the museum or you have not visited for a couple of years, then I encourage you visit this upcoming year. Watch for publicity on the garden tour that is scheduled for the 21-22 of July from 10am to 3pm each day. Passports are $10 and will be available in June. Information on the garden tour will be posted on the Sudbury Horticultural Society's website, http://www.sudburyhorticulturalsociety.ca/ and on Facebook.
The Capreol Business Association invites everyone to visit Capreol that weekend and its members are supporting the tour by having additional planters and flower boxes at their businesses to enhance the tour and to promote commerce in Capreol. The association has adopted as its slogan, "ALL ABOARD CAPREOL" and it fully supports the museum. The NORM will continue to work with the business association, the Capreol CAN and the planning department of the City of Greater Sudbury to promote the idea of Capreol becoming a railroad themed town.
The museum , as it continues to develop, creates challenges for the directors. One of these is the make up and operation of the board. One suggestion is to create an advisory board which would allow some current members to act within a committee structure and be able to work on projects and the day to day operation of the NORM. The advisory board would include people with the vision, skills and interest commensurate with the development and expansion of the NORMHC. If you are interested in being part of an exciting institution please contact me at ssthomas5@sympatico.ca or by phone at (705)858-5050.
A number of exciting events and activities have been scheduled for 2012. Visit and support the NORM this year.
